The Meaning of Democracy
Jan 10th, 2008 by April
Many people have different definitions of the term ‘democracy’ but most of us can agree that in a democracy, people have the right and the privilege to vote for who will lead them. It is indeed a privilege, and some would argue a responsibility, considering how many people around the world would love the chance to do so but nevertheless have leadership forced upon them.
As this landmark election for U.S. president unfolds, it is important for those of us who are Americans to step up and vote for whomever we believe, in our hearts, is the best leader for our nation. We always hear the statistics and the prognoses about the fact that not enough people vote, and it is sadly true. Civic engagement is one of the ways we can dialogue with our leaders and have a hand in how our country is run. It is such an important task for every American to undertake. Minorities and women especially should cherish the opportunity to vote, as we had to fight for a right that was denied us years ago.
The New York Times has published a 2008 Election Guide that outlines what each candidate stands for and proposes to do as president. I urge you all to read up, watch some news on television, educate yourselves and then get out there and vote. Your voice makes a difference in this country, and consequently, in global history.
