Blog Action Day: How Can Clothes Help the Environment?
Oct 15th, 2007 by Ann
Today is Blog Action Day, where bloggers around the world unite to give one issue a voice: the environment.
302 Designs is part of a large movement of businesses that aim to have eco-conscious business methods. All of 302 Designs t-shirts are sweat-free and currently two 100% organic t-shirts are available, Metamorphosis and Passion.
While many of us try to live ethically and treat the environment with respect and care, I think there is often the perception that unless you are living an eco-lifestyle, you aren’t really doing your part. Yes, if we could all live an eco-lifestyle, be self-sufficient, and produce minimum waste, the world would be a better place. However, this is not possible for everyone and to be honest not everyone wants to make that much effort, sad as that may be. But it’s the middle ground that needs to be convinced to do the little things to help out. Even small gestures that you don’t think impact the environment can make a difference, specifically in terms of clothes:
- Buy organic clothes. Why? Because there are no, or limited amounts, of chemicals and toxins used to make them. Non-organic material is produced with elements such as formaldehyde and the amounts of herbicides and pesticides used to grow commercial natural fibres is staggering.
- Buy less clothes. Yes, that’s right. Clothes are another form of consumption that needs to be put in check, especially since producing them isn’t doing little ol’ Earth any favours. Cloths are now incredibly cheap, no thanks to sweat shop production, but that isn’t an excuse if you consider that most clothes are thrown out well before they are no longer usable.
- Don’t throw away your old clothes. Give them to charity, try out your sewing skills, sell them on eBay. Do anything but throw them away!
